Q) Is there any variation in Customs duty and storage time at U.A.E. ports?
A) No, Customs duty is 5% and this figure applies to all the U.A.E. ports. Free storage on imports is 10 days per container (compared with 7 days in Dubai). Subsequent costs are also lower in Sharjah.

Q) I have containers for re-export. Are the procedures for re-export common to all U.A.E ports?
A) Yes - with the exception that in Sharjah the customs duty deposit cheque will not be encashed for up to five months. Therefore, if you present your re-export papers to customs prior to the expiration of the five months your cheque will be returned.

Q) Will I be able to make any saving by using Sharjah ports?
A) Saving on transportation is estimated at Dhs.100 (USD 27) at least compared with rates ex Dubai Terminals.

Q) Some shipping lines call at other ports. So how can I bring my containers to Sharjah without changing my shipping lines?
A) More than thirty shipping lines bring containers to Sharjah including the "Top Twenty" in the world. The shipping lines either send their own vessels or use common carrier feeder vessels to bring containers to Sharjah. If you ensure that Sharjah is shown on your letter of credit as "port of discharge" then the line is obliged to bring your container to Sharjah.

Q) I am a consignee based in Sharjah and my container has been discharged in Khorfakkan. How and where do I clear the container and who will pay for transport to Sharjah?
A)
1) If the L/C and B/L shows Sharjah as the port of discharge then the shipping line has responsibility to move (and pay for) movement to Sharjah. The container will move under customs bond to Sharjah Inland Container Depot (SICD) for you to clear.

2) However, if L/C and B/L do not show Sharjah (but have Khorfakkan as port of discharge), then you must go to Khorfakkan and clear yourself and transport is at your cost.
