Gulftainer wins Umm Qasr Port Contract

Press Conference at Basra

In a major development for the Gulftainer Group and also for Iraq, Gulftainer has been awarded the concession to operate and manage container facilities in Umm Qasr Port, the key marine gateway to Iraq.

At a ceremony held in late March in the head office of the Iraqi Port Authority in Basrah city, the contracts were signed by Mr. Peter Richards (Gulftainer Group Managing Director) and Capt.Salah Khodair Abood (Iraq Port Authority Director General).

More than 40 Iraq Port Authority (IPA) Directors were in attendance including Capt. Salah Khodair Abood - IPA Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Aziz Shnawir - Deputy IPA DG and Engineering Director and Mr. Taleb Bayesh - Umm Qasr Port Director.

The two signed contracts were for Berth 8 in the South Port, with the aim is to start operations in three months, and the Iraq Container Terminal (between South and North Port), which is under construction.

On the same evening Gulftainer held a press conference in the Minawi Basha Hotel in Basra where most of the media reporters and representatives based in the city attended. In his speech Peter Richards highlighted, "We are pleased to announce the agreements between Gulftainer and the Iraqi Port Authority. We are proud that the Iraq Port Authority has put its trust in Gulftainer Company and this is a very important issue for us.We fully understand all the responsibilities we are undertaking and we will ensure that this agreement will help to develop the Port of Umm Qasr.

Gulftainer is a UAE based company with more than 33 years of experience in ports management and logistics. We have projects and investments in several countries such as: UAE, Pakistan, Turkey, Africa, Indian subcontinent and other countries around the world.

If I was to mention a key characteristic that distinguishes Gulftainer, I can say it is the ability to cooperate and build constructive relationships with our partners.

At Gulftainer, we don't only talk about projects, we accomplish projects and this is very clear from our intention to invest substantial sums in the Iraqi ports and other logistical projects in the country.

By awarding Gulftainer these projects, Iraq Port Authority has not only partnered with a port operator but with a strategic partner in different logistics projects across Iraq. Together we will ensure that all the cargo coming into Iraq will be distributed securely and quickly. We believe that by finding solutions for the logistics sector in Iraq we are participating in developing and rebuilding Iraq".
