A new trade gateway for East Africa that will transform Uganda’s logistics sector and position the country as a regional trade hub
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates – 15 December 2025 – Gulftainer (GT), the global trusted leader in integrated maritime and logistics solutions, today confirmed that it has entered into advanced discussions with the Government of the Republic of Uganda to develop Uganda’s inaugural rail‑connected dry port.
During a high‑level meeting at Nakasero State Lodge, Gulftainer’s Group CEO, Farid Belbouab met with His Excellency Yoweri K Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, alongside senior cabinet members including the Minister of Works and Transport and the Attorney General of Uganda. The talks centred on a joint vision to create a modern, rail‑linked logistics ecosystem that will streamline cargo movement, boost supply‑chain efficiency, and catalyse broader regional trade.

The proposed dry port, to be situated at the intersection of Uganda’s expanding railway network and key industrial zones, will provide seamless intermodal connectivity to ports by shifting container traffic from road to rail. The facility is expected to cut transit times, lower logistics costs, and enhance Uganda’s competitiveness as a gateway for East African trade.
Uganda is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, with strong potential to emerge as a key logistics hub for East Africa. The dry port project marks a pivotal moment for Uganda’s trade and logistics landscape.
This strategic partnership is supported by the Government of Sharjah, the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Government of Uganda. Together, all parties will work to conduct a comprehensive technical, economic, and site-selection workstreams which are now progressing in close coordination with the relevant authorities.
